Why I Use Iodine to Prep for Piercings

Clean, proper prep matters · By Pink Gem

Why Prep Matters

Before a piercing ever happens, the skin needs to be properly prepped. This step matters more than most people realize. A piercing is a controlled wound, and how clean that area is before the needle touches your skin plays a huge role in how well it heals.

A lot of places still use alcohol and call it good, but alcohol and iodine are not the same thing. They do different jobs, and for a piercing, I want the skin prepped, not just wiped down.

What Alcohol Actually Does

Alcohol is mainly a surface cleaner. It’s good at removing oils, dirt, and residue from the skin, which can be useful, but that’s not the same as proper final prep for an invasive procedure.

  • It evaporates very quickly
  • It mainly works on the surface
  • It does not stay active very long
  • It is better for cleaning than true surgical-style prep

Alcohol cleans the skin. It does not prep it as thoroughly as iodine.

What Iodine Does Better

Iodine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic, which means it works against a much wider range of microorganisms. It is designed for the step where skin is about to be broken.

  • It works against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes
  • It stays active on the skin longer than alcohol
  • It reaches into pores and tiny skin openings better
  • It gives the area a more thorough prep before piercing
Alcohol wipes away surface debris. Iodine reduces microbial load in a way that better supports a safe piercing.

Why It Matters for Healing

Every piercing introduces jewelry into a fresh wound. If the skin is not properly prepped first, you are increasing the chance of irritation and other healing issues right from the start.

Using iodine helps create a cleaner starting point, which can support:

  • Smoother healing
  • Less irritation
  • Lower risk of contamination during the piercing
  • A better overall experience for the client
Healing starts before the needle ever touches the skin.

My Standard

I’m really particular about prep because I see what happens when corners get cut. A lot of the problem piercings I end up fixing were already set up poorly from the beginning.

For me, iodine is part of doing things the right way. It’s a simple step, but it makes a big difference. Your piercing deserves more than a quick swipe with alcohol and a hope for the best.

At Pink Gem, I want your piercing to start off as clean, safe, and well-prepped as possible.
