Piercing Aftercare

Proper Care is the key to safe healing and long lasting results. Healing a piercing is a long-term commitment. Be patient, consistent, and gentle with your body. Every piercing is unique, and your healing process may differ from others.

1

WASH

WASH your hands thoroughly prior to cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason.

2

SPRAY

SPRAY with sterile saline wound wash while healing 2-3 times a day. Moving or rotating jewelry is not necessary during cleaning/rinsing and may actually irritate the piercing.

3

DRY

DRY with clean, disposable products like gauze or cotton swabs, gently removing any crusty debris or build up.

What is Normal?

  • Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruising.
  • During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals.
  • A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is actually complete. This is because this type of wound will heal from the outside to the inside. Although it may feel fine on the outside, the interior could still be fragile.

What to avoid

  • Avoid cleaning with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibacterial soaps, and iodine.
  • Avoid ointments as they prevent necessary air circulation.
  • Avoid submerging your new piercing in water such as pools, baths, and oceans until fully healed.

Important notice

If you experience excessive redness, swelling, pain, or discharge, contact your piercer or healthcare provider immediately. These may be signs of infection.

A healthy immune system will aid in the healing process, so it’s important to eat nutritiously, get lots of quality sleep, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and practice overall good hygiene, including frequent hand-washing.

In addition to maintaining good overall health, it’s important to create a clean environment for your piercing to heal. Change pillowcases regularly, avoid sharing towels or bedding, and be mindful of exposure to pet hair or dirty surfaces.

Piercing Healing Tips

Follow these essential tips for proper healing
  • Avoid Touching

A piercing is an open wound and dirty hands or fingernails can transfer bacteria.

  • Don’t Remove Jewelry

Do not remove your jewelry during the healing process as it will begin to close immediately.

  • Avoid Products

Refrain from putting body creams, makeup, moisturizers, and perfumes directly on the piercing. In the shower, try to keep soaps or shampoos away from the area and rinse thoroughly after.

  • Avoid swimming

Stay out of pools, hot tubs, and natural bodies of water during the healing process.

  • Sleep carefully

Avoid sleeping on your new piercing and use clean pillowcases to prevent irritation.
